The error message "Error communicating with kernel" appears

  • You receive the error message "Error communicating with kernel“


First try to launch your ESET product manually to resolve this issue.

Open your ESET product manually by clicking Start All programs ESET →  ESET Smart Security or ESET NOD32 Antivirus to resolve this issue. If you are still not able to launch your ESET product, or you continue to receive the error message, proceed to the solutions detailed below.

I. Repair your ESET installation

  1. Click Start All programsESETESET Smart Security or ESET NOD32 AntivirusUninstall
  2. Click Next
  3. Click Repair.

  5. Once the Repair is complete, click Finish and attempt to open your ESET product again. If you continue to receive an error message, proceed to part II.

II. Uninstall and reinstall your ESET product using the ESET Uninstaller tool

  1. Use the ESET Uninstaller tool to perform a manual uninstallation.
  2. Reinstall your ESET product. If the issue is not resolved, continue to part III below.

III. Make sure the ESET Service is running

  1. Press the Windows key  + R, type services.msc into the blank field and click OK. The Services window will be displayed.
  2. Right-click the ESET Service (ekern.exe) and select Properties from the context menu.
  3. Verify that the Startup type is set to Automatic and that the Service Status reads Started then click ApplyOK.

    If you do not see Started next to Service Status

    If you do not see Started next to Service Status, click Start. After the ESET service initializes, click OK.

  4. Restart your computer. If you still receive the error, you may need to remove a malware infection from your system. Continue with solution IV below.

IV. Ensure that your computer is clean

  1. Win32/Sirefef (Zero.Access rootkit): Visit the following ESET Knowledgebase article for detailed instructions on determining if you are infected with the Zero.Access rootkit.

    If you determine that you are not infected with the Zero.Access rootkit, follow the part b instructions below for the Win32/IRCBot.ANR stand-alone removal tool.
